Wine has become so fashionable yet obtaining a formal qualification in wine appreciation has only recently become available in New Zealand.This course offers the enthusiastic amateur to study about wine, viticulture, wine making, tasting and matching to food. Join us in a fun learning environment to learn, taste and increase your knowledge in this rapidly growing industry.

This comprehensive wine course focuses on the main wine varietals grown in New Zealand and the styles of wine that have built their reputations. The course looks at the European traditions that have influenced NZ winemaking, as well as the winemaking process and basics of viticulture. Students learn how to taste and evaluate wines and the principles that underscore food and wine matching.

This course incorporates the following unit standards:

  • Unit Standards 4637 Level 4 Credit 4 (Ver 5) Demonstrate knowledge of NZ wines and wine producers
  • Unit Standards 22912 Level 4 Credit 4 (Ver 1) Evaluate wine

Professional Wine Studies
WSET Intermediate Certificate
2 WEEK INTENSIVE COURSEWine & Spirit Education Trust

The WSET Intermediate Certificate in Wine and Spirits from the London based Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) looks at wines from around the world as well as spirits and fortified wines like Port and Sherry. Our programme is perfect for beginners and people who are passionate about wine as well as those working in the industry who wish to gain more knowledge and a well-respected international qualification. Our experienced tutors are industry professionals who have worked in restaurants and hotels and hold the WSET qualifications. The course is taught in an approachable manner to ensure that participants learn lots but also have fun!

There is a 50 question multiple choice examination. The exams are then sent to the WSET in London for marking. We receive notification of grades within 15 days successful candidates receive the Intermediate Certificate and lapel pin from the WSET.

Advanced Professional Wine Studies
4 WEEK INTENSIVE COURSE

In this course participants will study the Advanced Certificate in Wine and Spirits from the London based Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET). This certificate looks in detail at the wine regions of the world – from Chile to Alsace; from Burgundy to Central Otago; from Champagne to Yarra Valley. During the
tutored tastings participants will learn to compare the Old World wine styles with those produced in the New World. Participants also study the wine making process for still wines, sparkling wines and fortifi ed wines as well as distillation.

The two and a half hour exam comprises 50 multiple-choice questions, four short answer questions and a blind tasting of two wines. The exams are sent to WSET in London for marking. We receive results after 8 - 10 weeks and successful candidates receive the WSET Level 3 Advanced Certificate and WSET pin.

This qualification is a pre-requisite for the WSET Diploma.
