Gap Year

If you're unsure about your career path after finishing school, taking time out to travel and explore the wider world is an incredibly worthwhile experience.

We have cherry picked some of our trusted network of employers to create an exciting new pathway for a Gap Year with intensive training in cookery or hospitality, followed by a seasonal work placement in some of New Zealand's most exciting places or in Canada.

The skills and character traits required to work in hospitality roles will benefit ANY career. These include customer relationships, working within and supervising a team, understanding the needs of a business, and how to become a competent and highly valued staff member.

Work Placement Process

New Zealand

Initial work placements take place for a pre-defined season upon successful completion of your study. Further employment must be organised directly with the employer.

Canada

Initial work placements take place for a pre-defined season upon successful completion of your study. A Canadian working holiday visa (IEC visa) is valid for up to two years.

Job Interview

Interviews for specific roles with take place with a representative of the employer via Skype. Full job descriptions will be provided.

Accommodation

All of our roles include access to staff accommodation, either in or close to the resort. Specific details will be provided by the relevant employer at time of interview.

Course Information

Course Requirements

Aged 18 and over at time of completion

New Zealand:

  • Must have the right to work in New Zealand to qualify
  • All employment documentation - contracts, role descriptions, Inland Revenue (tax), and Kiwisaver and wage payment information to be managed directly with the employer and the student

Canada:

  • Must have a current valid New Zealand passport
  • Have no criminal convictions, including driving offenses
  • Have valid travel insurance for the duration of your stay
  • Be able to prove access to over $2,500 on arrival in Canada
  • Further criteria may apply - full information will be provided

What Qualifications will I Gain?

COOKERY:

  • NZSFW Certificate in Cookery Level 3
  • Food Safety Unit Standards

FOOD & BEVERAGE:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Food & Beverage Level 4
  • NZSFW Certificate in Wine
  • WSET Level 1 Award in Wine
  • WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits
  • Licence Controller Qualification (LCQ) Unit Standards
  • Food Safety Unit Standards
