Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS) Programme

The Court of Master Sommeliers certification training and exams will be available in Auckland in June 2017. This is a great opportunity for people working with wine to extend and develop their skills. This programme is held at Villa Maria Estate with Cameron Douglas MS.

Introductory Sommelier (Level 1) 2 days + exam

The lectures are presented by Master Sommeliers along with wine tastings and practical service demonstrations. The examination comprises a multiple-choice theoretical paper and a short elementary practical service test. Click here for more information. 

Introductory Sommelier (Level 1)

  • 15 June and 16 June 2017
  • 17 June Service exam 

Certified Sommelier

Certified Sommelier qualification is the primary certification for wine and beverage professionals in the Hospitality Industry and is intended to provide a meaningful qualification for the working Sommelier.

Certified Sommelier Examination:

  • Short written theory paper of 40 multiple choice and short answer questions
  • Tasting test consisting of two wines tasted blind, and answered on a tasting grid
  • Practical service test
    • Certified Sommelier: 17 June 2017 exam

It is highly recommended that you join GuildSomm a US nonprofit membership organization with open membership for all wine professionals uses the trademarks of the Guild of Sommeliers. https://www.guildsomm.com

Other qualifications

The Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS) is a certification body for wine service professionals—after passing all four levels (Introductory, Certified, Advanced, Master) of CMS exams candidates receive the Master Sommelier designation. http://www.courtofmastersommeliers.org

Advanced Sommelier

The examination comprises three parts:

  • Theory: 24 multiple choice and 60 short answer questions in 60 minutes
  • Practical tasting: 6 wines tasted blind in 25 minutes
  • Practical service: 45 minutes

Master Sommelier

Throughout the examination, the candidate must exhibit an exemplary standard of both technical and social skills, demonstrating the courtesy and charm of a Master Sommelier plus an ability to sell. Examinations are held annually in London and the USA.
